Abstract

Juvenile delinquency is defined as criminal behaviour committed by minors. and largely motivated by racism and the impacts of the Second World War. This article analyzes the factors contributing to juvenile delinquency in short stories “Thank You Ma’am”. This study was conducted with the aim of finding out and describing juvenile delinquency using a descriptive qualitative method where the object of this research is in the form of the text of the short story entitled “Thank You Ma’am” By Langston Hughes. The method of obtaining data in this research involved observation in short story, and literature study. After being analyzed based on the theory by Sarwono (in Andriani, 2018), the results of this study indicate that in the short story entitled “Thank You Ma’am” By Langston Hughes there are four factor of juvenile delinquency, namely Rational choice (occurs of their own choice), Social disorganization (disappearance of societal institutions), Stain (Social-Economic), and Male phenomenon (Boys are more delinquent than girls). Based on the results above, it can be concluded that stable societal order prevents juvenile delinquency in this short story, due to increased immigration, racial tensions have escalated, resulting in social conflicts. Competition for jobs and housing has intensified, forcing many individuals to live in overcrowded and unsafe conditions.
